14th June 2023, London – BIP hosted its first Green & Blue Festival London yesterday, focusing on strategies for sustainability (green) and digital innovation (blue) as the global economy transitions to Net Zero.

The festival was moderated by Sky News presenter Jayne Secker and supported by the Italian embassy, with a keynote speech from Inigo Lambertini, Ambassador of Italy to the UK. He spoke on building a positive legacy for the next generation and the need for a pragmatic approach to achieve Net Zero pledges, not least the importance of partnership to promote ecological innovation between the UK and Italy.

Other expert speakers included:

  • ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi shared his insights on the progress to Net Zero made by the UK and Europe. He highlighted the need for greater collaboration between private and public sector agents, how the firm has been working directly with the UK government on its decarbonisation efforts, and the potential of developing efficient magnetic confinement fusion to adequately meet the power demands of heavy industry and population centers.
  • BIP UK Strategy Partner Francesca Baiocchi presented a new research report exploring the central role played by energy networks in developing the necessary infrastructure and transportation to ensure a quick and orderly transition. This encompasses the potential of both electrification and hydrogen fuels, as well as the importance of holding the long-term view.
  • Further speeches were made from Rt Hon. Chris Skidmore, MP and Chair of the Net Zero Review, and the Minister of State for Energy Security and Net-Zero, the Rt Hon. Graham Stuart, who both outlined the need for better production, security and regulation of the energy market.
  • Trevor Hutchings, Sustainability Partner at BIP, moderated a panel featuring thoughts from Marco Alvera, Co-founder of Zhero and CEO of TES-H2, Karen Boesen, Group Chief Financial Officer of Sonnedix and Chris Manson Whitton, CEO of Progressive Energy, on the necessary factors for an orderly and accelerated transition, particularly around the mix of hydrogen and electrification required for the fastest, lowest-cost transition.

The event also featured thought provoking discussions, interactive panels and engaging network sessions from industry leaders including Bassam Fattouh, Director of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, as well as representatives from a cohort of start-ups changing the future of energy – Sarah Merrick, CEO of Ripple Energy, Ajay Lukha, Chief Commercial Officer of Evolito and Paolo Iasevoli, Co-Founder and CMO of Evja.

Carlo Capè, CEO of BIP, commented on the event:

“Our inaugural Green and Blue Festival London was a celebration of all the innovative ways global companies are committed to tackling climate change, and a stark warning on the need for acceleration from both public and private sectors. I hope that for all attendees, the event raised awareness on all the renewable energy production, transportation and storage methods that will be critical for an orderly global transition.

“As the Rt Hon. Chris Skidmore MP relayed, the energy transition is the economic opportunity of the century as well as a moral imperative. We are looking at not just an environmental challenge but a chance to change business models for a new era of sustainability and innovation – of green and blue.”
